William Penn
Philadelphia honored William Penn by immortalizing his image in a statue in his likeness. The statue of William Penn, is presently situated on top of Philadelphia's City Hall, located at Broad and Market Streets. Until the passage of recent laws in the mid 1980's, Philadelphia City Hall, with the statue on top, had the distinction of being the tallest building in the city.
The statue of William Penn crowning the tower is 37 feet high and weighs 53,580 pounds. It was designed by Alexander Milne Calder. The statue was displayed in the court yard in 1893 and hoisted to the tower in sections the following year. The work was completed on November 28, 1894. The site where city hall now stands was once called Center Square, and was the site of the city's original water works.
